Maxwell Wines, with its 40 acre vineyard of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Grenache and Verdelho, is north of the township of McLaren Vale, on Olivers Road, just a fifty minute drive south from Adelaide. McLaren Vale has a Mediterranean climate, tempered by the sea a few kilometres away to the west and the area has convincingly established a reputation for grapes and wines of amazing quality and intensity of flavours. Red varieties such as Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon have proved themselves consistent achievers at international wine shows and whites like Chardonnay and Verdelho are always in demand by producers and consumers all over the world.
In 1997 Maxwell Wines relocated from their original winery, established in 1979, into an impressive three level building incorporating sandstone and old solid timber, carved into a limestone hill face which oversees a manicured landscape of vines and olives rolling across the Vale to the foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges.
The winery has been designed to take advantage of the gravitational flow of the grapes, contributing to the quality of the wine and allowing visitors to view a 'working winery' while sampling the wines and taking in the magnificent views from the cellar door.
