Early in the 90s Eric Bowers and his wife Beverley found 20 hectares of silty, stony, free draining land at Dashwood in the lower Awatere valley to the south of Blenheim, Marlborough. They formed the company of Clifford Bay Estate Ltd, bought the land and set about vineyard design. Richard Bowling, noted viticulture consultant gave advice and rootstocks of sauvignon blanc, riesling and chardonnay were planted in 1994 and 1995.
Since the first vintage of Sauvignon Blanc in 1997 when it was awarded three gold medals and various other credits, Clifford Bay Estate wines have continued to receive significant accolades including.
The vineyard is set on terraces above the Awatere River, which flows from its birth in the high country alpine basins. The vineyard epitomises New Zealand’s clean and green image.
