Battle of Bosworth - McLaren Vale

Located in Willunga, to the south of the McLaren Vale township, Edgehill Vineyard was established in the early 1970's by Peter and Anthea Bosworth in a derelict almond grove. Son Joch took over the management and day to day running of the vineyards in 1995.

The wines take their name from the original Battle of Bosworth, fought on Bosworth Field, Leicestershire, England in 1485. Here the last of the Plantagenet Kings, Richard the III, was slain by Henry Tudor, becoming the last king of England to die in battle, ending the War of the Roses.

The roots of the family’s battle were planted in the early 1840’s with the first Bosworth vineyard in McLaren Vale. The modern day Battle of Bosworth saw the conversion of ‘Edgehill’ vineyard to organic viticulture nearly ten years ago.
There are now some 8 acres each of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay (and a few rows of Viognier) which are fully certified ‘A’ grade organic by the Biological Farmers of Australia (BFA), a process which takes four years. There are a further 40 acres of vineyard under conversion to fully certified organic viticulture.

Eschewing synthetic chemicals, Joch controls weeds with the aid of the yellow Soursob (which features on our label). Considered a weed by many, it grows rapidly with the onset of winter rains and forms a natural weed mat. This prevents the germination of other weeds in spring and helps reduce under vine evaporation in summer.

Using old-fashioned grape growing techniques and employing sustainable modern viticultural practises means The Battle of Bosworth vines are grown to produce the very best grapes possible, and by keeping cultivation to an absolute minimum, with a negligible impact on soil structure. Joch and the humble Soursob have proven to be a very potent force in this viticultural Battle of Bosworth.

Battle of Bosworth produces single vineyard, organically grown wines with flavour and balance that best express the unique characteristics of their McLaren Vale foothills site. Wines produced under the Battle of Bosworth label include a Shiraz, a Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of Chardonnay and Viognier, a Cabernet Sauvignon Dry Rosé (The War of the Rosé), A Shiraz Viognier and a very limited volume of the Amarone-inspired ‘White Boar’.
